Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What are architectural finishes?

Architectural finishes, also known as architectural films or interior films are light weight, self-adhesive and durable films designed to look identical to natural materials, such as wood, natural stone, metal, etc. These films can be applied to multiple flat or curved non-porous surfaces, including walls, ceilings, elevators, columns, millwork and boats.

Why choose 3M™ DI-NOC™ Architectural Finishes over traditional materials?

3M™ DI-NOC™ Architectural Finishes have several advantages over traditional materials:

  1. Sustainability: 3M™ DI-NOC™ Architectural Finishes are an environmentally friendly way to refinish quality materials, as opposed to replacement. A traditional renovation typically means hauling large quantities of demolition materials to landfills, whereas 3M™ DI-NOC™ can be applied over top of finishes. 3M™ DI-NOC™ Architectural Finishes may allow you to obtain LEED credits. You can learn more by viewing the Technical Data Sheet.
  2. Fast Installation with Minimal Downtime and Substantial Cost Savings: When it comes to a traditional commercial renovation, the process can take weeks or even months. With 3M™ DI-NOC™ Architectural Finishes, the process can take a matter of hours to days, which leads to substantial cost savings on a renovation project.
  3. Selection of Finishes: Choose from 1000+ aesthetically pleasing patterns for any renovation project, from 3M™ DI-NOC’s collection of finishes:

  4. Durability: 3M™ DI-NOC™ Architectural Finishes are suitable for a variety of climates, resisting water, dirt, impact, wear, abrasion and mold. 3M™ DI-NOC™ products have been tested for abrasion resistance. The product was applied to an aluminum plate and exposed to 7,000 cycles using a Taber Abrader with a 1 kg load. The test Result was no change to the pattern. 3M also carries an abrasion resistant series (AR Series), which has superior resistance to abrasion, scratches and stains. It is perfect for high-traffic areas. The 3M™ DI-NOC™ AR Series can be applied to a variety of non-porous surfaces, including metal, wood, plaster, etc. There are 74 abrasion resistant finishes.

How does 3M™ DI-NOC™ compare with other architectural finishes?

3M is an industry pioneer in Architectural Finishes, producing the first line of DI-NOC™ in the 1980s. 3M carries over 1000+ modern and stylish patterns that are suitable for multiple applications, including interior, exterior, abrasion resistant, matte and whiteboard.

Not all architectural finishes are created the same. Other architectural finishes may look great during the installation; however, aren’t made to withstand moderate to high traffic areas or even fingerprints. When exposed to impact, other architectural finishes crack and flake, whereas DI-NOC doesn’t. 3M’s innovative technologies in each architectural film, fire safety rating and warranty make DI-NOC the preferred solution.

Availability is a large factor to consider when comparing architectural finishes in Canada. WRI Supply stocks over 212 finishes for multiple applications that can be shipped next day so the project can stay on time without the concern of getting the materials needed.

The expected performance life of 3M™ DI-NOC™ Architectural Finishes is up to 12 years for indoor, vertical applications.

Each 3M™ DI-NOC™ architectural finish comes with 3M’s world-class Comply™ adhesive that has unique air-release channels for quick and simple installations that last for years to come.

Can DI-NOC be applied near a window?

Yes! DI-NOC Architectural Finishes provide excellent UV resistance, especially when compared to laminates, veneers or even other architectural finishes. DI-NOC has been tested against UV light weathering and it stands the test of time.

If DI-NOC gets damaged, can it be repaired?

Yes, it can and you can follow the following guidelines, depending on the type of damage to the surface.

  • For stains or marks left on the surface, rub the surface with a soft cloth and warm soapy water.
  • For scratches, rub the area with a surface restorer. We recommend 3M Marine Vinyl Cleaner & Restorer.
  • Dents should be heated carefully with a heat gun to help the surface rebound, reducing visibility. Gouges can be repaired by cutting out the damaged film and replacing it with a matching piece of film. We recommend watching 3M’s instructional video.
